News: Smoke and Carbon Monoxide
Smoke and CO detection in rented homes. The Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (Amendment) Regulations 2022 come into force on 1st October 2022. The regulations apply in England to private sector and social landlords who will be required to increase coverage of heat/ smoke alarms and install a carbon monoxide alarm where there are fixed combustion appliances (excluding gas cookers). The regulations also include a repair duty.

Fire incidents in England. Fire and Rescue Service data for the last year show that of the incidents attended, fires accounted for 26%, fire false alarms 40% and non-fire incidents 34%.

Crane slewing brakes. HSE research into safety of cranes reveals that crane failure is often linked to the crane slewing brake being left on when the crane is out of service.

Dyson fined £1.2 million for lifting accident. Dyson has been fined £1.2million after an employee was struck by a 1.5 tonne milling machine. The accident happened when two employees were moving a large computer controlled milling machine using jacks and rollers.

Employee drawn into lathe. A recent prosecution took place after an accident with emery cloth at a rotating lathe. The system of work adopted at the workplace was one that the HSE has banned for some time.

Client fined £300,000 over fatal roof fall by contractor. A flooring retailer has been heavily fined after allowing a contractor to work in a blatantly unsafe manner, resulting in the death of a contractor who fell through a fragile cement roof.

Man fell from forks. Staircraft Group Ltd, has been fined £200,000 over an accident in which an employee fell during window cleaning. The employee had been lifted on a stillage which was carried by a fork lift truck.

Exposed to paint stripper fumes in basement. Brick Restoration Ltd and its two directors have been sentenced following the death of a construction worker who was overcome by dichloromethane vapour whilst working in a London basement.

Builder gets suspended jail sentence over fall. Missing guard rails and a large quantity of construction materials stored on a scaffold, each contributed to an accident in which a construction worker died, a court has heard.

Bus crush at Stagecoach. Stagecoach Devon Limited has been fined £380,000 plus costs of £18,000 after an accident in which a worker was crushed during a reversing manoeuvre. There were insufficient trained banksmen or other precautions at the company’s bus depot.

Cargo handler fined £200,000. The prosecution of Portico Shipping Limited illustrates the importance of supervising the night shift. The case was heard after a man was fatally crushed between shipping containers. It was found that night shift workers ignored safe systems of work such as pedestrian walkways and safety measures required when manoeuvring containers.

Child accessed construction site. Howard Civil Engineering Ltd has been fined £600,000 for the death of a young child that fell into a vertical pipe and suffocated. The seven-year-old had become trapped in the pipe when playing on the site adjacent to an existing housing development.

Machine guarding faults. After workers suffered hand-injuries at poorly guarded machinery, Midland Steel Reinforcement Supplies (UK) Limited has been fined £450,000 plus costs.

Warehousing Company Fined Over Poor Safety Standards. Poor safety standards including for work at height have landed B2C Retail Limited with a £40,000 fine. The prosecution took place after sole director Mr Kempiak refused to accept a caution in relation to the offences, and after he also declined an interview.

£3.6 million fine for electrical accidents. A mining company has been fined after two electricians suffered severe burns due to failures in the isolation of power supplies. Cleveland Potash Limited ordered to pay £3.6 million plus costs of £185,000.
